    I recently attended the 2003 ASA Northwest Blues Convention in Salem-Keizer, Oregon in which some of you also attended and did trainings. I am so grateful for you being there, I look forward to working with you again! Emily you are the BEST!!! Thank you so much for the training on the "New Line Up Card System". It has always been troublesome for me, although I still got it done. Your system anyone can do with ease and confidence that it is correct and you are aboultly correct in saying that it is vertually fool-proof. I want to thank you all for making yourselves available to us I know that you have busy schedules this time of the year. Thank you all again for your time and I hope to see you at another training.     Hello Ms. Alexander - I met you this past weekend at the NCAA Clinic in Stockton, CA. First of all, I must say that I am extremely impressed with your presentation. You are an excellent speaker. I learned a lot from that 4-hour session. Secondly, I would like to say that I am in the process of relocating to the Phoenix area sometime in the near future (Avondale to be exact). I believe that Mr. Terry Ching has mentioned my name to you in the recent past. Once I am thoroughly engrained in Avondale I will let you know. I am interested in getting into your program there in Arizona. Finally, I just want to say that this website is outstanding! You must have some of the most knowledgeable umpires in the country. The information put out on this site is enormous. I will surely begin to surf it now that I am aware of it's contents.     I need help with a play that has been happening lately... There is a 2-2 count on the batter and a runner on third, the batter gets ball three and decides to walk, then tries to steal second and draws a throw, could be out. (1 is she out (2 what happens if the runner makes home? (3 Should we prevent this by giving the count immediately?

    Hi, what a wonderful web site. Makes me want to but a mask back on the blue shirt again. I umpired almost 20 years from the time I was 17 until I was 36 when I was in a running accident with a van door and suffered some brain damage.( It has been pointed out that this makes me more qualified to UMP.) I was privlidged to call so really neat ball game but they really don't stand out at all what I really miss most is all my wonderful friends I met along the way . The best part of umpirng is really not the big games , or that bager at the plate but the comradery around the tent, the drives on the way to and from he airports, and the wonderful friends you meet along the way.

    I want to take a moment to first say THNX to the Metro Phx ASA umpires Bd of DIrectors for giving me the opportunity to represent them and all ASA at the Men's 50 and over Natl tny held in Prescott AZ, July 6-8, 2001. Our UIC was Steve Rollins and I will tell you that he set 3 priorities for us at the tny. 1- Hustle, 2- Timing, 3- Fun. Well I would like to say that ALL PRIORITIES were accomplished, it was a GREAT umpiring crew that I had the PRIVILEGE to work with.     I am looking for a clarification of the goofy play at the NCAA championship (UA/UCLA) where the UCLA runner was called out for alledgedly "running the bases in reverse". That doesn't seem to make sense. I could see a circle rule violation or abandoning the base; but, I just don't understand the "call" on the field (as reported by the TV commentators). I would appreciate your input.

    Nice to hear from you. It has been awhile. My new job as Superintendent has halted some of my officiating and this spring I sat out a season. I walked over to one of our softball games this spring and saw an umpire wearing a dark (not blue) hat with a red bill. He was also wearing blue jeans. I had the checks in my hand and after watching him I walked back to my office with the checks and told the coach to have them see me (if they wanted to get paid). When they arrived I talked to them about their appearence, positioning and mechanics. They listened and left. I thought I would not see them again but about a week later one of them came back and had a regular hat. He stopped by to see me prior to the game and asked more about officiating properly whereupon I gave him your name and told him that you run some classes in the spring. He told me that next year he was going to make sure to take some classes. Up here in the the Prescott area, you sign up to officate and receive no training. Have started a REQUIRED volleyball clinic this fall for officials, though. - Jim

    By way of Introduction my name is John Glistak. I am a Level 6 accreditated Fastpitch Softball Umpire in the State of South Australia in Australia. One of my duties is to produce a newsletter, called Strike Me Blue, for softball umpires essentially within our State. This task I have now done for almost 5 years with the newsletter going out quarterly. My aim is to provide softball news of interest to all umpires. This news may have a local, national or international focus as the need arises. In addition, I include a range of articles derived from such sources as Referee, Cactus Spine, ISF, and any other relevant sources. These articles are predominantly, what I call 'professional development' articles, but sometimes news articles are also used. In each case the source of the article is identified in the newsletter. However, my specific request is pertaining to your articles entitled "Umpiring Philosophies". I have shown copies of your articles to our State Umpiring Director, Toula Connolly, who agrees with me that most of the articles are appropriate for our newsletter with perhaps minor changes to terminology and deletion of several paragraphs that refer to umpiring practices which differ from those recommended in Australia. I therefore seek permission to use the articles, and any future articles, as appropriate for Strike Me Blue. Please advise me at the earliest opportunity as our next newsletter is proposed for July.
