| Can there be a "Wreck" in high school softball? NFHS rules make no provision for incidental contact. Contact between the offense and defense-without-the-ball-in-possession is to be judged either interference or obstruction. However, there will still be "wrecks" and collisions during plays where the defense has the ball. Unless judged to be malicious contact, this contact is part of normal play. Example: runner slides into a base where a fielder has the ball and attempts to tag the runner. Example: fielder has the ball and lunges to tag a runner running by. They collide. These plays should be ruled "out" or "safe" according to the outcome of the play (fielder drops the ball, fielder holds the ball, runner gets to the base before the tag, the actual tag is missed, etc) and no interference or obstruction should be called. |
