| Sweeping the Plate...or anything else on the field |
 |
- Notice the umpire has a solid, balanced base with his feet. He is not stooped over or crouched down.
- Notice that his brush is very small.
- Notice that his mask is in his hand...not on his face or on his head as in the cartoon.
- Notice that his butt is facing away from the stands. Whether you are sweeping the plate, the pitcher's plate or a base - your butt is always pointed away from the spectators.
- Realize that the game is played on dirt. Bases will get dirt on them. Sweeping is not an umpire's priority. If you can see it clearly...it's clean enough! To stop a game to sweep can interrupt the momentum of the game and it always draws attention to the umpire.

| Batter's Box Stuff |
 |
The lines are considered part of the batter's box. In order to be out of the box the batter would have to have one foot touching the ground completely outside the batter's box as in E.
In A, B, C & D the batter could legally hit the pitch because he would be considerd in the batter's box.
If the batter hit the ball while in E, he would be calld out for being out of the batter's box.
Prior to the pitch, the batter must have both feet completley within the lines of the batter's box. He can touch the lines but no part of his foot can be outside the lines. Therefore, prior to the pitcher rleasing the ball, the batter would be legal in C & D but illegal in A, B & E.
The umpire should call time and require that the batter assume a proper & legal stance within the box.
Of course, once the pitcher pitches, A, B, C & D all become legal. |
